true grit.

grit: n. firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger

i read this article in the ny times magazine a few weeks ago and it has stuck with me. what remained in my head was the title (what if the secret to success is failure?) and the study they report on which found characteristics of successful people. one of the most important qualities is grit, which they define as the ability to persist through failure(s). i think i’m so afraid of failing that i don’t take enough risks and i don’t work my grit muscles. that is something to work on—and at least i have inertia working on my side at the moment (everything was/is changing in my life!). i think i should cross-stitch true grit and frame it above my soon-to-be-existent desk (next to my velociraptor sign of course) as a daily reminder.
