The Space

Land of Nams: living in Johannesburg, exploring the world, documenting the things I love

I try to stay out of Johannesburg malls as much as possible (I just hate malls!), which is a bit of a challenge in this mall-crazed country. Every once in a while, when I do have to go (because I’m still relatively new here) I find a gem. Inside of The Space (which I’ve mentioned before) you can forget that you are inside a big, character-less mall and shop in a well-curated store that sells both of my favorite things: stuff for my home and stuff to wear.  I promised to show you our (mostly) finished office but that is going to have to wait until after Tuesday when I get to borrow a friend’s wide angle lens and not give it back so for now I’ll show you some quirky details I picked up to make my office a place I love to spend time editing pictures, sewing, and thinking up ideas. First, I have an obsession with Pantone. I found a lovely little book to keep all my lists, appointments and ideas. I love the colors because just looking at it makes my creative juices flow. I also write my photography notes and ideas from class in it.

Land of Nams: living in Johannesburg, exploring the world, documenting the things I love On my desk I have a couple rocks that I’ve picked up from beaches that we’ve been to. I don’t remember exactly where I’ve dragged them back from, I think from the Aegean and the Mediterranean. I like to add a bit of ‘science-y/nature-y’ stuff in all my rooms. I thought the rock shaped eraser fit right in, and it was so cute (if functionless).

The last thing I grabbed was this lovely little piece of pottery. I love the texture, the color of the inside, and the imperfect shape. Since we need to keep our giant set of keys with us all the time (panic buttons, alarms, opening gates, etc) I primarily use it as a place to store my keys when I’m working in the office so they don’t eyesore away my creative juices. They have this store all over RSA  and an online catalogue (it only shows a small collection of their clothes though). If you’re looking for unique little things for your house or clothes by South African designers then it is a perfect stop.
