I would like to unabashedly gush about the best Mexican food on the continent of  Africa and maybe outside of the Americas (prove me wrong, I dare you). El Burro’s in the neighborhood of Greenpoint , Cape Town: on top of delicious, authentic food they have yummy drinks like their chili margarita (pictured above), a legitimate tequila menu (if you’re in the mood), adorable décor and adorable waitresses.  If you eat pork do yourself a favor and get the chilorio pork tacos (I get it every time I go and it’s sooo good I tried to recreate it in my kitchen). Pork shoulder that’s been braising all day in an adobo chili marinade, delicious fixins’, and homemade corn tortillas. They even fly in the good Tabasco from Cali and Mexico.  Make a reservation on a weekend night or busy time of year. If you’re into seafood P strongly recommends the seafood soup (big enough for a meal).

El Burro’s is located at 81 Main Road in Greenside on the second floor, look up!,  call for reservations 021-4332364 on weekend nights or busy times of year

  1. I love eating out in Cape Town. The only place that possibly surpasses Cape Town in terms of restaurants is Franschhoek, can’t wait to get there again and have a good meal!

  2. Nams, you’ve just made my night! We LOVE Mexican food (and dammit that there isn’t a decent one in Johannesburg) and as we’ll be in Cape Town in March, we will definitely have this on our hit list, along with our personal sushi and dim sum fave, Beluga. Thanks for telling us about this :-)

    • …and if you ever get a craving for chili con carne you can check out the recipe on Joburg Expat (plus chili powder):-).

Seriously, I think I miss a decent Margerita the most.

      • I agree about margaritas, we should have a margarita day/evening and make our partners pick our drunk selves up. and have seen your chili con carne!!, and I am having another mexican food post this week on thurs! :) I reeeally miss it.
